Food packaging with defined oxygen requirements

Meat and cheese packaging are established applications for EVOH, including vacuum packs and modified atmosphere packaging. EVOH is also used in thermoformed packs and bag-in-box formats. The material and grade are selected around the package, rather than treating all food applications as interchangeable.

For chilled meat, we consider whether the product has bones or sharp edges, the packing method, storage conditions and intended shelf life. Cheese packaging may need a different balance of gas control, sealing and opening behavior. These details help narrow the material and thickness options.

Vacuum packing and modified atmosphere packaging address different atmosphere requirements within food applications. Specify the packing method as well as the food category when requesting a film.

Prepared meals and pet food with heat treatment

Prepared meals and wet pet food that undergo boiling or retort need a film structure suited to the full heating and cooling cycle. The barrier layer, supporting materials and seals all contribute to the finished pack.

Specialized EVOH grades for boil and retort applications can help reduce whitening and delamination associated with hot-water treatment. The grade and complete film structure must suit the intended process; not every film containing EVOH is suitable for retort use.

Share the treatment temperature, holding time and cooling process when requesting samples. The customer trial should include that heat treatment and a check of the finished packs.

Personal care and refill packaging

EVOH is also used in personal care packaging, including multilayer tubes. Oxygen protection can matter for oxidation-sensitive ingredients, while aroma retention may matter for fragranced formulations. These are established material applications, although the formulation and the full packaging system still need compatibility testing.

For refill pouches and tubes, consider the contents together with the closure, spout and seams. Compatibility and leakage checks should use the actual formulation and pack components.

Selected medical and technical applications

EVOH also has selected medical and technical packaging uses. These require application-specific materials and documentation; food-packaging experience alone does not establish suitability for those uses.

Development priorities across applications

Priority

Useful development question

What to compare

Material reduction

Can the package use less material while retaining its required functions?

Trial results for the thinner structure and finished pack

Reliable conversion

Does the film run consistently on the intended line?

Forming, sealing and winding observations at agreed settings

Performance after use conditions

Does the package retain its required protection after processing and handling?

Relevant barrier, integrity and storage results

Recycling compatibility

Does the complete pack meet the criteria for its target collection and recycling system?

Assessment covering the structure and other pack components

When reducing thickness, compare material savings with the effects on forming, sealing and handling. The aim is a pack that uses material efficiently while still doing its job.

Recycling compatibility depends on the complete pack, including its closures and labels, and the recycling system it is intended for. A PE-based description alone does not settle that question.

Choosing samples for your application

Start with what you pack and what you want to improve, such as sealing, forming, protection during storage or material use. An existing film specification or sample is helpful, but you can begin with product details and photos.

Send Fuya the product, package format, approximate dimensions, storage or heat-treatment conditions and expected quantity. We can recommend film options and provide samples. Test them with your product and equipment, then share the results so we can review the proposed specification. Explore Fuya EVOH barrier film options.
