When Food Packaging Needs a High Barrier Film

Separate oxygen protection from moisture protection

Oxygen transmission rate, or OTR, describes oxygen transfer through a specimen under stated test conditions. Water vapor transmission rate, or WVTR, addresses moisture transfer. These measurements answer different questions. A low OTR does not by itself establish a low WVTR, and neither measurement proves that a completed package has no leaks.

When comparing reports, check the specimen, thickness, units, method, temperature, humidity and pressure basis where applicable. Ask whether a result describes a resin film, a multilayer web or a complete package. Resin data can guide material selection, but the purchased structure needs its own relevant evidence.

Distinguish the initial atmosphere from later gas transfer

A conventional barrier film slows gas transfer; it does not actively remove oxygen already inside a sealed pack. Vacuum packing, gas flushing and an appropriately designed active system address different parts of oxygen control. A suitable barrier helps retain the intended conditions after the pack is closed.

Modified atmosphere packaging is also not always a low-oxygen system. The gas mixture is matched to the product and packaging objective and may include carbon dioxide, nitrogen and oxygen. Fresh produce applications may require controlled gas exchange to match respiration. The lowest possible gas transmission is therefore not the right target for every food.

Post-process film and finished pack evaluation

Use the table to identify the property worth investigating. If a pack has a damaged seam or a puncture, check that failure before assuming a different barrier resin will solve it.

Check the complete package before upgrading the film

Review every part of the package that contributes to protection. For a tray pack, that includes the tray, lid and sealed perimeter. For a pouch with a fitment, it includes the film, seams, fitment and closure. A roll-film result alone cannot establish the performance of all these elements together.

Also check sealing settings, product contamination in the seal area and handling. Keeping these conditions consistent makes a comparison between films more useful.

Compare samples under your packing conditions

Decide what you want the sample to improve, then compare it with your current film using the same product and normal packing conditions.

Note the current film specification, if known, and the problem you want to solve.

Use the actual product and packaging equipment.

Include the storage and handling conditions the pack will encounter.

Compare sealing, leakage, appearance and any agreed barrier or product-quality checks.

The customer confirms the finished-pack result and intended shelf life. A lower OTR alone does not establish a longer shelf life for the product.

Compare cost against the required package performance

Compare cost per usable pack as well as price per kilogram. Thickness, pack dimensions, production waste and how the film runs on the line can change the practical cost.

Additional barrier is useful when it addresses a product requirement. If the current film already provides the required protection, a simpler structure may remain the better fit.

Prepare a useful supplier brief

Send Fuya the food, packing method, storage conditions, package dimensions and the issue you want to improve. Share any existing specification or barrier target if available.
